[ judging from the turn of the silence, he figures that Ryoma doesn't like the way this story is turning out to be. however, he doesn't stop. ]

The king, who loved his daughter very much, came up with a plan. Knowing that the princess is very lonely, he gave her a magical cat. Because the cat was magical, it was very adorable, and very, very lovable.

The plan worked. She came to love the cat more than she wanted to use her tennis powers.

This sealed her tennis prowess, but also, as contrivance would have it, kept her alive. [ by ways of exposition, he goes on-- ] In doing so, the king had hoped that perhaps her powers would be sealed long enough for her to grow into a woman who can understand them, so that when it became time to unseal them, she would be able to love tennis, and no longer be consumed by her own prowess.

Ah, and here, the romantic element: he issued a decree to his kingdom-- that whoever can teach the love of tennis to his daughter shall have her hand in marriage.
